ASCE Celebrates 100 years at OSU
- ASCE
The American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society.
ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine – the built environment – while protecting and restoring the natural environment.
- Chi Epsilon
Chi Epsilon is the National Civil Engineering Honor Society. It was founded at the University of Illinois in the Spring of 1922. The next year, Chi Epsilon was granted a certificate of incorporation as a National Honor Fraternity and, subsequently, chapters were installed at the Armour Institute of Technology (now Illinois Institute of Technology) and Minnesota. Two more chapters were added prior to the First National Conclave at Armour Institute in 1924. At the 1924 Conclave, the first Supreme Council was elected and an expansion policy carefully formulated. Since then the growth of Chi Epsilon has been steady. There are now 119 chapters which have initiated over 73,000 members.
Chi Epsilon is dedicated to the purpose of maintaining and promoting the status of civil engineering as an ideal profession. To this end, initiation into Chi Epsilon distinguishes the student of civil engineering who exemplifies the qualities of scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability. At the same time, Chi Epsilon members have the responsibility of extraordinary service in the advancement of their profession.
Through its membership, Chi Epsilon fosters the development and exercise of sound traits of character and ability among civil engineers, always seeking an ever higher standard of professional service.
OSU Chapter HistoryThe Oklahoma State University Chapter of Chi Epsilon is one of the oldest in the United States, having been chartered in 1941 with 21 members. The OSU chapter has been very active over the years, initiating over 1200 students, several faculty members, and Chapter Honor Members.
Membership in Chi Epsilon is considered to be not only an honor, but also a responsibility to help others. The Chapter holds weekly tutoring sessions for statics and strength of materials. It also hosts review sessions for the FE exam each semester. Chapter members participate in at least two major public service activities each semester, and pledges are required to take part in the actives as well. In the recent past, we have worked on Adopt-a-street program, a day at the Humane Society, a rehabilitation project for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, clean-up of an outdoor ecology laboratory for a Stillwater Grade School, the campus-wide Big Event, the local Food Drive and Love Feast, on- and off-campus recruiting and special events, and held pizza parties and picnics for pledges and members. The Chapter holds monthly meetings, frequently with guest speakers (all meetings are open to visitors). We also have an annual Spring Banquet to honor that year’s pledges, Chapter Honor Members, and others.
To be eligible for membership in the OSU Chapter, an undergraduate must have completed at least one-half of the coursework toward a BS in either Civil or Architectural Engineering and rank scholastically in the upper one-third of his or her class.
- Concrete Canoe Team
The purpose of this organization shall be to provide students with a practical application of engineering principles learned in the classroom, along with important team and project management skills required to lead successful careers. The organization will work all year round to be able to represent Oklahoma State University at the annual ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition. This event challenges the students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility of concrete as a building material.
- Engineers Without Borders
EWB changes lives by working closely with communities to ensure long-lasting improvements in health-related areas such as drinking water, sanitation, and stormwater management. EWB strongly supports the "teach a man to fish" mentality of serving and has worked with communities in Honduras and Guatemala in this way since 2009 to bring clean drinking water to those in need.
This organization is NOT exclusive to engineering students. There are many education, language, business, and graphic design aspects of any project or organization. All students and faculty are eligible to join. Come check out our meetings!

- Institute of Transportation Engineers
The Institute of Transportation Engineers is an international educational and scientific association of transportation professionals who are responsible for meeting mobility and safety needs. ITE facilitates the application of technology and scientific principles to research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation, policy development and management for any mode of transportation. Through its products and services, ITE promotes professional development of its members, supports and encourages education, stimulates research, develops public awareness programs and serves as a conduit for the exchange of professional information.
