Dr. Yates joined the Oklahoma State University Construction Faculty in 2006 as an Assistant Professor. In 2010 she was promoted to Associate Professor. During her Doctorate she focused on her research on women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. She accepted the position as Program Coordinator of Construction Engineering Technology in 2013.
Dr. Yates began her teaching career at Pittsburg State University in 2002, and has taught numerous construction courses throughout her academic career including: Construction Drawings, Concrete Technology, Estimating I, Strength of Materials in Construction, Structures I, Construction Contracts and Capstone courses. She received the Halliburton Excellent Young Teacher Award in 2008 and CEAT Advisor of the year in 2010. Dr. Yates served as the Associated Schools of Construction Region 5 Director 2014-2017, Associated Schools of Construction Secretary 2018-2020, and currently serves as the Associated Schools of Construction 2nd Vice President and will serve as the Association President 2024-2026
She also teaches construction professional development classes through the Local Technical Assistance Program, CEAT Professional Development, Oklahoma AGC, and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.
She enjoys sharing her passion for increasing the recruitment and retention of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through local, national and international presentations. Additionally, she speaks on women in construction, construction related topics, charting your own path in college, navigating your future, and setting goals and achieving them.
Before joining the academic world, Dr. Yates worked for a national award winning heavy highway concrete paving company, and later worked for TranSystems Inc., a national Transportation Design and Inspection firm where she ran the testing and inspection laboratory and served as an inspector on various highway and bridge projects in Southeast Kansas.
