What do you like about OSU-Tulsa? I like that the MSE department is within the Helmerich Research Center which houses state-of-the-art characterization equipment with immediate access to students for research purposes. As an international student from a heavily populated city, I find Tulsa relaxing for its awesome low cost-of-living city life while not being densely populated. Moreover, Tulsa offers a good network of cycling lanes and beautiful parks (especially the Gathering Place) for those who prefer a healthier lifestyle.

Stephen Polkowski
Graduate Student
B.S. Mechanical Engineering, Oklahoma State University
Research Interests: Magnetism (of any form!), electrochemistry, structure-property relationships, data modeling, and application of machine-learning techniques to materials science.
What do you like about OSU-Tulsa? Graduate school is definitely a partnership between student and advisor. I love the level of personal investment from the faculty to help the student succeed with their research projects. Additionally, I love the amount of hands-on work the students get to perform. The Tulsa metro area is big enough that there are substantial amounts of extracurricular activities, but it doesn’t have a “big-city” feel. You’re never more than a 15-minute drive from an adventure in the great outdoors.

B.S. Environmental Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Turkey
Research Interests: Novel clay-based materials for pollution control, ceramic composites
for adsorption, sustainable materials for environmental protection.
What do you like about OSU-Tulsa? The MSE department has interdisciplinary research opportunities and access to state-of-the-art imaging equipment. It is a great learning environment for people from differerent backgrounds. It helps new students adapt fast and people exchange ideas to widen their horizons. Tulsa also has a very unique environment for fine arts; there are always lots of events going on.

Christine Watson
Graduate Student
B.S. Chemical Engineering, B.S. Physics, North Carolina State University
Research Interests: Low-cost ceramic membranes with controlled porosity for filtration of produced water; In-situ high temperature materials research.
What do you like about OSU-Tulsa? The research projects are very practical and applicable to the local economy and industry. You know that your research has real world impact. The professors also foster a supportive environment that encourages creativity and innovation. Coming from the East Coast, Tulsa has the tight-knit community of a small town, but the cultural opportunities and attractions of a big city. The Oklahoma Aquararium and Oklahoma Renaissance Festival are my favorites!
