  • Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs)

A limited number of teaching assistantships are offered each semester. These assistantships are usually quarter-time or half-time. Quarter-time positions require approximately ten hours of work per week; half-time positions require approximately twenty hours of work per week.

Teaching Assistants can be assigned any of the following duties: lead discussion sections, assist in the laboratory, grade papers, hold office hours, and other miscellaneous activities.

Upon acceptance, applicants will automatically be considered for a teaching assistantship. Please do not correspond with MAE about possible financial aid. An official email from MAE will be sent out immediately to the applicant if an assistantship has been awarded. Applicants that do not receive an upfront offer might receive a teaching assistantship assignment after demonstrating hard work and motivation for at least one semester in our program.

  • Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs)

Many graduate students are hired by professors to work on funded research projects. These students conduct research for faculty and are paid from the faculty’s research grants and contracts.

To receive an assistantship, the applicant must directly contact the MAE faculty in their area(s) of interest. Master's students are not generally offered a research assistantship until demonstrating at least a semester of hard work, motivation, and research proficiency within coursework and the laboratory setting. Doctoral applicants are usually offered assistantships at the same time the applicant is admitted to the MAE Graduate Program.
