Frequently Asked Questions

About the Program

  • How long has the program existed?

The ETM program accepted its first students in 1998. Since that time we have granted over 600 degrees and over 30 certificates.

  • What is the delivery method of the courses?

This program is available 100% online to meet the needs of working professionals. There is never a time when students are required to come to campus. All courses are delivered through Canvas. A typical class contains links to all course materials including video lectures. There are multiple formats for viewing the lectures which gives you the opportunity to view the lectures on your schedule and in a method that works best for you. The lectures are stored digitally and can be accessed in any of the following ways:

    • On-line Video Streaming: Students are able to view the lectures on-line generally within 24 hours after the on-campus class has finished.
    • Compressed file (zip files): Students can download a compressed folder with the class lecture.

Our courses adhere to the university semester schedules (Fall, Spring and Summer sessions) and deadlines will exist for assignments in each course (courses are not self-paced). The MSETM program does offer short courses that take place over 5-8 weeks. This allows additionally flexibility in scheduling as you may gain credit hours while being enrolled for a smaller portion of the regular semester.

Communication with the faculty can be via email, phone, discussion board or occasionally videoconferencing. As a student, you will also have access to the OSU library, the OSU email system, and the Student Information System (SIS) where you can check your grades and pay tuition.

  • Can I take some courses in-person if I am near an OSU campus?

Students who live near one of our OSU campuses may also consider taking some courses in a traditional, on-campus, live format. Note that not all courses required for the ETM program are offered on campus, so on-campus students will take a mix of in-person and online classes.

  • What type of students make up the student body?

Our student body is primarily made up of working professionals who are pursuing the degree on a part-time basis, with a few traditional full-time on-campus students.  The educational backgrounds of the majority of our students span all fields of engineering and technology but also include a small number of students with degrees in information systems, business and others.

  • Is the program accredited?

Yes. The MSETM program draws upon courses and faculty from the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, the College of Business Administration and the College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University. Each of these three colleges is fully accredited as is customary and appropriate. In addition Oklahoma State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a part of the North Central Association. The NCAHLC, one of six U.S. regional institutional accrediting associations, offers the highest form of accreditation that is available to universities.

  • What is the average class size?

The average class size in the 2024-2025 academic year is 21 students.

  • Is a thesis required?

No. The MSETM program requires a capstone project which is embedded in a required course ETM 5133 Capstone to Strategy, Technology and Integration.  Other courses required that help students prepare for the capstone are ETM 5111 Intro to Strategy, Technology and Integration and ETM 5511 Capstone Preparation.

  • Is OSU able to accept transfer credit?

In some cases up to nine hours of prior graduate credit earned by students may be transferred in to the MSETM program. Transfer credit must be earned at an accredited university, be graduate level coursework and a grade of "B" or better. Must show on an official transcript in order to be considered. Military training approved for graduate level credit through ACE may also be acceptable

  • Are there any on-campus requirements?

No, there is never a time during the program when students must come to campus.  We do however invite all of our graduates to join us on campus for graduation ceremonies.  Also, we enjoy meeting our students and love to show off our beautiful campus so we welcome visits anytime.

  • Is TOEFL required for international applicants?

To be admitted we require a score of at least 89 on a TOEFL taken within the past two years. TOEFL waivers may be granted if prior degree is from an institution where medium of instruction is English or school is located in a country where English is the official language.

Current Students Questions

  • I have a hold on my record, how can I remove it?
    • Plan of Study Holds
When you reach the half-way mark in your program (17 hours) the graduate college will notify you that a plan of study is required before you can enroll in any more coursework. Please note that the ETM office cannot remove this hold. Please follow our instructions for completing your plan posted here: Plan of Study. It will require some effort on your part and it may take some back and forth communication between the ETM office and the student before a plan can be submitted and the hold removed. In other words – do not procrastinate! The collection of signatures and review by the graduate college takes some time so please give this some attention so the hold does not prevent you from getting into courses that you want.
    • Bursar Holds
If there is a balance on your bursar account you will not be allowed to enroll. Go to http://bursar.okstate.edu to login and pay your balance. If something is not clear regarding your bursar account, I recommend your contact Nathan Cragun from our distance education office. (nathan.cragun@okstate.edu or 405-744-5146). He is very skilled at translating “bursar-ease” and may be able to answer your questions or act as a liaison to the bursar’s office for you.
  • How do I calculate the cost of the program?

Your tuition rate is determined by your residency status. Oklahoma residents (those who pay taxes in Oklahoma) will receive the reduced in-state rate. All others will be classified as non-resident or international. Graduate non-resident students admitted to an OSU approved 100% online degree/certificate program will be charged a tuition rate of $360.00 per credit hour. Special rates for active duty military exist.

For an estimate of total cost, please see the tuition and fees estimator

Your cost for textbooks varies by course but you could roughly estimate $75 per course for books. (some will be much less, others will be higher) The number of courses a student will take during the program can also vary. The minimum number possible is thirteen courses and on average our students will take 19-20 courses. Roughly estimated: (20 x $75 = $1500.00)

Other incidental costs include proctoring fees if applicable. These vary by location and are not required for all courses.

  • What is the leave of absence policy?

Oklahoma State University (OSU) graduate students are expected to maintain active status through continuous enrollment from the time they matriculate until they graduate. Students who are not able to maintain active status are strongly encouraged to consult with their program, advisor, and Graduate College to determine whether requesting a leave of absence (LOA) is the most appropriate course of action. International students must consult with the International Students and Scholars (ISS) office to ensure compliance with Federal immigration policy. Example situations that may lead a student to explore a leave of absence request are medical, personal, employment and military service. Students who do not have an approved leave of absence and are not continuously enrolled may experience negative consequences related to academic, visa, financial aid, and other student issues – see University policies and guidelines for additional information. A student status of “good standing” (academic and conduct) is generally required for a leave of absence.
